Topfoto Archive’s Reality Checked Campaign: A Call to Preserve Authentic Imagery in an AI Era

The Topfoto Archive has been a bastion of photographic history for nearly a century, preserving millions of authentic images from the 1840s to today. Yet, the advent of photo-realistic AI image generation now poses an existential challenge, threatening not only Topfoto’s mission but also the notion of reality. In collaboration with Annex Films and its writer-director, David Baksh, Topfoto has launched “Reality Checked,” a compelling two-part campaign confronting this issue head-on.

Defending Reality: The FAKE and PROMPT Campaigns

The “Reality Checked” campaign comprises two concise 40-second films titled FAKE and PROMPT. Directed by David Baksh, these films star Topfoto’s archivists and target creative professionals in image-based industries. Their message is clear: while AI offers unprecedented innovation, unchecked misuse can erode public trust in the authenticity of visual media. Through a passionate appeal, FAKE and PROMPT warn against the allure of fabricated images and underscore the irreplaceable value of genuine photography in cultural preservation.

This initiative, Topfoto’s first professional campaign, marks a pivotal moment. Flora Smith, Topfoto’s Managing Director and owner voices her concern: “Human resonance requires human reality, the kind of true stories and images that are humming in our archive.” Her words capture the underlying mission—to protect truth within academia, journalism, and creative practices from becoming diluted by synthetic visuals.

A Shared Concern for Creative Integrity

The collaboration between Topfoto and Annex Films was born from a shared unease about AI’s rapid infiltration into visual storytelling. Already connected through a previous documentary project, Topfoto MD Flora Smith and David Baksh identified a pressing need to challenge the acceptance of AI-generated content in professional and public spaces. As Baksh notes, “There are few aspects of life that will be untouched by the AI revolution. Yet, we remain largely unprepared for both its impact and its aftermath.” This concern transcends photography, extending into every field where images serve as records of reality.

Baksh and Smith argue that creators must scrutinize how AI tools are used in visual media. While these technologies hold great potential, they require a vigilant, ethically conscious approach. Baksh warns that without careful management, the cost may be more significant than anticipated. His analogy of society being “dazzled by the light show” of AI innovation reflects a stark reality—unchecked enthusiasm may lead to unforeseen consequences.

Annex Films: Pioneers of Purposeful Storytelling

Annex Films brings nearly fifty years of experience to the campaign, offering a wealth of storytelling expertise. Founded in 1973, Annex operates as an independent creative collective, dedicated to producing impactful, socially conscious films. Their work with Topfoto is another chapter in a long legacy of purpose-driven projects, reflecting a commitment to upholding artistic integrity in a changing landscape.

Topfoto Archive: A Legacy Worth Preserving

Since its founding in 1927, the Topfoto Archive has served as a guardian of culturally significant imagery. Housing millions of images, it captures moments that would otherwise fade from memory. As digital media reshapes perceptions of authenticity, Topfoto’s mission becomes increasingly vital. By holding fast to its roots, Topfoto continues to celebrate the power of the authentic image, offering a stable foundation in a time of rapid change.

“Reality Checked” serves as a rallying call for image-based industries to engage with AI critically and responsibly. As FAKE and PROMPT illustrate, genuine images hold the power to connect, inform, and preserve truth across generations. This campaign reminds creators and viewers alike that authenticity must be defended with care and intention, or risk becoming a relic of the past. The collaboration between Topfoto and Annex Films represents a significant step in that direction, championing the enduring relevance of reality in an increasingly artificial world.
