A French Townhouse with an industrial kitchen

A French Townhouse with an industrial kitchen

It’s been over 15 years since I visited Uzes in the south of France. My brother had rented a house in the countryside near the village where he welcomed family and friends that summer to celebrate his birthday. It was special to be in one home with almost the entire family again and to discover the different villages together. Seeing the four-story medieval townhouse renovated by a British couple in Uzes, one of the medieval towns we visited, I was reminded of this vacation,

The building, a so called ‘Hôtel Particulier’, the French term for a large, one family house in the heart of the town was once home to a cardinal of the pope. The family brought this 13th century building into the 21st century and made it their private home. Each room in the residence measures four meters from floor to ceiling, which is adorned with original wooden beams. Mantelpieces, doors and decorative ornaments dating back to the 18th century while the stone floor and fireplaces are boasting 700-years.

VIPP V1 Kitchen

The couple used their professions as furniture maker and graphic designer to decorate their home. Filled to the brim with design objects ranging from Bauhaus to Danish mid-century modernism fused with contemporary cabinetmakers, this vast collection also presents pieces from Chris’ own company Isokon Plus. I think this modern looking VIPP V1 Kitchen, one of VIPP’s first kitchen modules, perfectly fits in this old townhouse with its old preserved features.
