Interior design firm Child Studio create an eclectic escape in London’s Mayfair by honouring an authentic design language.
Child Studio have drawn on Art Deco references and mid-century modernism to bring a fresh perspective to a Mayfair home nestled in a mews courtyard in the heart of London’s West End.
Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s Grand Salon at Rue de Babylone in Paris, Child Studio founders design duo Alexy Kos and Che Huang sought to create a home that feels like an intimate bubble away from London’s bustling energy while still embracing the unique history of its surroundings.
The living room features the Lampampe by Ingo Maurer, Calacatta Viola marble side tables, a vintage Caprani wall lamp and Eames folding screens.
The London interior designers faced a unique design brief that stipulated functional and impressive spaces to host guests, focused on the study space, living room and dining area. Belonging to a hotelier and restaurateur, the space called for deep, mature and calming zones for both professional meetings and dinner parties with friends. “We also wanted the interior to reflect the idea of far-flung journeys and the lost sentimentality of travel,” Alexy Kos says. “The space is filled with an eclectic collection of heirlooms, art pieces and antiques.”
Skylights allow the space to extend itself and welcome natural light, together with the courtyard. As a result, daylight changes each space as the day goes on and highlights the soft geometry over the living room’s fireplace. The design firm’s interest in light play is also seen in the intimate dining area, where a glass brick partition separates it from the kitchenette. Light filters through the glass brick wall, creating a distinct pattern that acts as its own piece of artwork.
Che and Alexy designed the custom round table especially for this project and the hand-knotted wool rug from their own collection, dedicated to the Bauhaus movement. Velvet Cassina Inchochine dining chairs and Ingo Maurer’s Uchiwa Chandelier also feature in the dining space.
Mid-century antique furniture was sourced alongside a collection of heirlooms, artworks and books to create warm and inviting interiors. One of the most difficult aspects of the project was the bespoke furniture and cabinetry. A mahogany wood bookcase wraps itself between each zone, created by local makers to segment the spaces and establish a sense of privacy between the living, dining and study spaces. Striking Rosso Levanto marble is also incorporated into the joinery to warm up the space.
The result of Child Studio’s Mayfair renovation is typified in their next project – a collaboration with the same client on a hotel in New York City.“The Mayfair project acted as a ‘physical mood board’ for the future hotel, with its eclectic yet tranquil home-like atmosphere,” Alexy says.
The study space features antique lithographs by George Braque, Jean Cocteau and Karel Appel and photographs by Guy Bourdin and Man Ray.
